About

Ex-military standards,
applied to every flue.

Gillespie Chimney Sweeps is Dan Gillespie — no call centre, no rotating faces, no subcontractors. The man who quotes your job is the man who does it, and the same man who answers when you ring back.

The habits come from the forces: turn up when you said, prepare properly, finish to a standard someone could inspect. In practice that means dust sheets before rods, boot covers at the door, and a room left exactly as it was found.

№ 02Services

Chimney and stove services.

Sweeping, stove servicing, blockage clearance, camera inspections, cowl fitting and certification — each one priced openly before any work begins.

Sweep at least once a year. Twice if you burn wood regularly through the winter — that is the guidance from the National Association of Chimney Sweeps, and it remains the cheapest piece of home maintenance most households will ever pay for.

№ 03Safety

Why an annual sweep matters.

Six things a professional sweep does for a working chimney, none of which are visible from the hearth.

01

Reduces chimney fire risk

Clearing creosote and soot removes the fuel a chimney fire needs to start.

02

Improves efficiency

A clean flue draws properly, so your stove burns hotter on less fuel.

03

Helps prevent carbon monoxide

Good ventilation lets combustion gases escape safely instead of entering the room.

04

Restores ventilation

Removes blockages and build-up so air moves through the flue as it was designed to.

05

Keeps insurance valid

Many insurers expect documented proof of an annual sweep for solid-fuel appliances.

06

Peace of mind

You light the fire without wondering what's up there. That's the whole point.

№ 05Questions

Frequently asked questions.

The things homeowners ask most often, answered without the sales pitch.

01How often should my chimney be swept?
Most wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves want sweeping at least once a year. If you burn regularly through the colder months, twice a year is a sensible habit — ideally before and during the heating season.
02Will my house get dirty?
No. Dust-control equipment and protective sheeting go down on every job, so the room is left exactly as it was found — just with a safer, cleaner chimney behind it.
03How long does a sweep take?
Between 45 and 60 minutes for most appointments, depending on the appliance and the condition of the chimney. You'll get an honest estimate when you book, not a four-hour window.
04Do I receive a certificate?
Yes — a recognised sweeping certificate on completion where applicable. Many home insurers ask for one, so it's worth keeping on file with your policy documents.
05How do I prepare for the visit?
Let the fire go completely cold — ideally no fire for 24 hours — and clear a little space around the hearth. Sheets, dust control and tools are all taken care of.
06What does it cost?
A standard sweep is £65 all-in, including the smoke draw test and certificate, with any additional chimney or flue in the same house at £30. Every other price is published on the tariff page — what's quoted is what you pay.
